Coastal Shipwreck

By Ian Read

The coastal waters around Cornwall are some of the most dangerous in the world, in fact it used to be a wreckers paradise, the wreckers as they were known would deliberately direct shipping on to the rocks so that they could plunder the cargo, the loss of human life was never a concern to the wreckers, this of course happened way back in the 1800’s but it is still talked about to this day.

But putting that aside because that was a deliberate act, there have been several famous ship wrecks such as the one on the night of the 14th October 1898 the S.S. Mohegan a newly launched vessel that was originally named the “Cleopatra” but was bought by the Atlantic Transport Company during the fitting out and renamed the “Mohegan”.

Anyway 75 days later on the evening of the 14th October on her second voyage to New York on the outward leg down the English Channel , she passed the Dodman Point some 23 deg out from her intended course, instead of being south of the Lizard she entered Falmouth Bay, just before 7oclock the passengers were settling down to dinner

Observers from the shore saw her lights pass across the bay heading for the Halford river, going into danger, she was seen to make a sharp turn to port indicating that the watch had seen the danger. The evasive action non the less had come to late and the vessel struck the Vase rock loosing her rudder, which to this day is still embedded there.

Now out of control steaming at 13 knots she struck the Voices ledge tearing her side out she sank in 80ft of water, going down by the bow and killing the lights as she sank, in the darkness the lives of 106 passengers and crew were lost , many lifeboats attended the scene but the darkness made rescue impossible.

The reason for her steering the wrong coarse has led to much speculation, it was probably due to compass error or the misreading of the compass card.
